Interview with Julius Randle’s Mom

Steve Jones of the Courier Journal spoke with Julius Randle’s Mom, Carolyn Kyles, about his recruitment. One thing that caught my eye was the fact that she said Randle would call Calipari for advice from time to time. Calipari is so cool that he doesn’t call # 1 players, they call him .

Randle’s mother, Carolyn Kyles, recalled a recent conversation she had with Calipari, who told her about a time Randle called him to ask how the coach thought he was faring during the July evaluation period.

“He said, ‘Hey, Coach, how did I look? What can I do better?’” Kyles said on Thursday morning. “And one of the things he told him was, stop catching the ball with one hand. Catch it with two hands. And (Calipari) said it was amazing, that the very next game, he did that.”

Kyles said Randle also had called Calipari and asked him about a way of coming off the dribble, and Calipari suggested an improvement that Randle made the next time out.

“(Calipari) said it’s obvious that Julius is hungry, that he wants to learn, that he wants to improve, that he’s going to work hard and listen and be coachable and do what his coach asks him to do,” Kyles said. “That was great.”
